What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring your content so that AI systems like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Claude cite it directly inside the answers they generate. Where traditional SEO competes for a blue link on a results page, GEO competes for a sentence inside the AI's actual answer, often with no click at all.
The discipline also goes by a few other names you'll see used interchangeably: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), LLM Optimization (LLMO), and Generative Search Optimization (GSO). They all describe the same underlying shift. AI engines don't rank pages; they extract facts, and GEO is how you make your facts the ones that get extracted.
The term itself was coined in a 2023 paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, by researchers at Princeton, IIT Delhi, and independent collaborators (Aggarwal, Murahari, Rajpurohit, Kalyan, Narasimhan, and Deshpande), later published at KDD 2024. Testing specific optimization methods against real generative engine responses, the study found that adding direct quotations from relevant sources lifted a page’s visibility by 41%, adding statistics by 30%, and citing sources by 27%, with the best-performing techniques boosting visibility by up to 40% overall. It’s the closest thing GEO has to a founding academic study, and its core finding, that citation-dense, quote-backed, statistically grounded content gets pulled into generative answers far more often, is exactly the logic behind techniques #2 and #3 later in this guide.
This matters because that shift is no longer small. By February 2026, AI Overviews were appearing on 48–50% of U.S. Google searches, up from just 6.49% in January 2025. That's a 7.5x jump in about a year (). Whatever your industry, a meaningful share of the people who used to click through to your website are now getting their answer without ever leaving the search results, which means the only way to still reach them is to be the source the AI decided to trust.
